Choosing a wine from the Saint Emilion appellation is always a good idea.
The region is dominated by Merlot (60%) and Cabernet Franc (30%), and its attention to crafting quality reds shows. The wines from this appellation are generous, full-bodied and intensely crimson-colored. Their strawberry and red-currant aromas are complemented by notes of soft spices, vanilla, leather and smoke, which develop with age.
In the mouth, wines of Saint Emilion appellation have solid but velvety tannins, which give them a flavorful and fleshy body. The only thing matching the refinement of their tannins is their strength, which is witness to their potential for longevity.
Saint Emilion is also one of the most beautiful wine-producing villages in France. The expression “the hill with a thousand Chateaux” is not just picturesque: the appellation represents more than 800 winegrowers.
Saint Emilion's weather is oceanic and temperate, due to the nearby Dordogne, which cools the summers and helps to avoid spring frosts. Autumns are sunny, which encourages perfect ripening of the grapes, especially Merlot.
Dating back to its medieval roots, the village of Saint Emilion has been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site both for its historical value and its importance as an exceptional wine-growing terroir.
